Warning: Air Conditioning Can Be Hazardous To Health

By Laura Stephens

Air conditioner is one of the greatest inventions ever made. It gives utmost comfort to everyone especially in tropical countries where heat can be very unbearable during the summer. Air conditioners work by absorbing hot air that passes through metal coils filled with Freon to help lower the temperature and blow out the air as dry and cool.

What Air Conditioners Provide

It provides protection from heatstroke in places with extreme temperatures. Heatstroke occurs during humid weather when the body loses the capacity to excrete heat. People who have heart disorders or diabetics are at greater risk from heatstroke.

AC units are beneficial for people who have allergies since the air conditioner filter pollen, dust, and other allergens that can trigger allergic reactions.

The Health Hazards

If the filters are not well maintained, they can pose harmful threats to what they can originally prevent. A dirty filter can be a ground for bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms that can be blown to the room and cause occupants to have allergy attacks, eye irritations, and nose and throat irritations. In worst cases, it can even cause flu sicknesses.

In big places like building who greatly utilise air conditioners, the water reservoirs can harbor harmful bacteria like legionella pneutnophila. This bacteria grows inside the unit and can cause the air sacs of lungs to inflate and have difficulty in breathing.

Aside from bacteria, air conditioners can also be a breeding ground for fungi and mold spores.

Studies have shown that people who work for prolonged hours in air-conditioned places are more prone to having colds and flu.

People with arthritis and neuritis may also find their ailment worsen when in air-conditioned places.

Some people put a stress on their bodies when they are unable to adjust well from being in a hot place and transferring to a cooler area.

People who are well adjusted to cool places are more prone to heatstroke. Their bodies are unable to cope during summer.

Another health hazard is when a person keeps going in and out of an air-conditioned room and the body becomes confused with extreme temperatures the body is undergoing.

A study has been administered wherein cars are found to have eight different types of mould inside the vents.

Air conditioner is an essential element in any household to give comfort to its occupants however, if not well maintained can bring about harmful effects to people. This machine helps ease any person’s stress due to high temperatures and probably work-related stress. Aside from avoiding allergies, it also helps in eradicating heat rash especially for infants. However, AC units also pose a threat to the environment due to high-energy consumption and the CFC it releases into the air. At the end of the day, it still best to weigh the pro’s and con’s of the situation and use air conditioners sparingly.
